#SURVIVINGAFRICASeries 1 Episode 1 : Why I chose to visit South AfricaSo there I was, final round of Sunshine Tour Q-School, 8 under par with only needing a steady round to qualify. 3 holes in, 4 over par, hanging on by a thread & needing some kind of miracle. Something just clicked. The swing started to behave. Putts finally started to drop. And with a few holes to go the dream was still alive ... December 2019, after a promising year on the amateur circuit & my first ever crack at European Tour Q-School, it was time for the next challenge! The plan was to turn pro & raise enough funds by working to support a big season ahead on the Europro Tour (UK). Unfortunately life had other plans. My world was turned upside down after hearing that my mum had lost her 20 year battle with MS. Spending the next couple of weeks struggling to deal with my mums passing and trying to control my emotions, I started to distract myself by focusing all my energy on golf. After getting the clubs back out, I met up for a game with a friend of mine, Phil Tomkinson (member at Otley). Who mentioned about going over to South Africa to try and qualify for the Sunshine Tour and suggested that I should come with him. My initial reaction was no, Until he showed me this (below)
I think it was important to try lift myself up, give myself something to look forward too and something to focus on, but more importantly get a nice sexy tan! So with a little bit of inheritance and a contribution from my Grandparents, the flights, accommodation, car rental and 5 weeks of guaranteed sunshine was booked. It may have been a last minute decision but it was a decision that I will never regret. The whole flight over, I was sh*tting myself. Anxiety was going through the roof. Any doubts or negative thoughts I had were flying through my head. But the plane landed, the anxiety was forgotten and it was time to get my tour card... As soon as we landed the first thing we did was go straight to the golf course and find a base for us to practice at, and I think its fair to say we was spoilt for choice. Houghton GC was first on the list with it being the host to the final stage of qualifying. As you can see it really was spectacular!
